In February 1927, Conn Smythe and investors purchased the St. Patricks and changed the name to the Toronto Maple Leafs. The name "Maple Leafs" came from a World War I fighting unit, the Maple Leaf Regiment. Smythe then became the general manager, head coach and longtime owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs. In 1919, the Toronto Arenas were purchased by the Toronto St. Pats. The new owners rescued the team from bankruptcy and renamed the team in honour of Toronto's growing Irish population. Therefore resulting in the green and white colours. The team won a Stanley Cup during the 1921 - 22 season.

The Toronto Arenas were a professional men's ice hockey team that played in the first two seasons of the NHL(National Hockey League) which was founded on November 26, 1917 in Montreal. The team won their first Stanley cup in the 1917 - 1918 season.
