In February 1927, Conn Smythe and investors purchased the St. Patricks and changed the name to the Toronto Maple Leafs. The name "Maple Leafs" came from a World War I fighting unit, the Maple Leaf Regiment. Smythe then became the general manager, head coach and longtime owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
